Introduction
The Chinese Biodiversity Information System (CBIS) is constructed to a national biodiversity information center (NBIC), which consists of 1 central information system and 5 disciplinary division information systems, and more than 30 data source information systems.
The 5 disciplinary divisions are :
Botanical Division in Institute of Botany
Zoological Division in Institute of Zoology
Microbiological Division in Institute of Microbiology
Hydrobiological Division in Institute of Hydrobiology
Marine Biological Division in South China Sea Institute of Oceanology
The data sources include specimen collections, botanical gardens, natural reserves, field ecosystem research stations, seed banks, geneplasm banks and research groups.
The project would finance the institutes and field stations participating CBIS to develop and enhance their ability of biodiversity information management and processing. Specifically, the project will provide the participating institutes and stations with appropriate computer hardwares and softwares, as well as network facilities. In addition, The project would also provide necessary training for personnels to design, implement and operate the information system. The goal is to promote the efficiency of exploration and utilization of the primary biodiversity information.
Data in CBIS
1) specimen data
2) off-site conservation data
3) seed and geneplasm bank data
4) key ecosystem data (field stations and reserves)
5) species inventory data
6) endangered and protected species data
7) ecosystem inventory data
8) major environmental data
9) social and economic data
Models in CBIS
1) predicting and monitoring key species and ecosystems,
2) evaluating the current status of biodiversity in China,
3) long-term population dynamics for key species,
4) system succession andgenetic evolution,
5) multisystem interactions.
6) modelling environment
Expert Systems in CBIS
1) endanged species conservation
2) PVA of endanged species
3) reserves planning
4) sustainable use of biological resource
5) expert system environment
Goals of CBIS
To stengthen the research capability of CAS in key areas relevant to biodiversity conservation, sustainable natural resource management, and restoration of degraded ecosystems and natural communities; provide the decision makers with both primary and derived scientific information.
The ultimate goal of CBIS is to combine
1) the primary information in the databases,
2) the derived theories in the model library,
3) the expertise of biodiversity conservation
to build an national integrated information system.
The CBIS will directly serve the purpose of decision or policy making for governmental agencies on the issues of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of biological resource.
